Burger Brawl to help city schools

Burger Brawl organizer Rob Wasserman (center) with The Dandelion's Robert Aikens and Jennifer Carroll.

Two years ago, Rob and Maggie Wasserman set out to raise money for a computer lab at their sons' elementary school by throwing a burger competition called Burger Brawl.

It was a major hit, and got even bigger in 2012. The Meredith Elementary School is now well wired.

For this year's third Burger Brawl, the sponsorships and admission fees will go to other schools. Principals are being asked to submit their requests.

Burger Brawl 2013 will be held Sunday, May 5, 2013, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catharine St.  More than 20 burger chefs compete, and more than 700 attendees are expected. Marc Summers will emcee.

Participants for 2013, so far, include: 500 Degrees, AllaSpina, Barbuzzo, Butcher and Singer, The Capital Grille, The Corner, The Dandelion, Ela, Good Dog Bar, The Industry, Kennett, London Grill, Lucky’s Last Chance, Misconduct Tavern, Miss Rachel’s Pantry, Percy Street Barbecue, Rouge, Saint James, Shake Shack, Silk City, South Philadelphia Tap Room, Spencer ETA Burger and Table 31. Wasserman’s restaurants, 500 Degrees, Rouge and The Saint James, will offer burgers, but do not take part in the competition.

Past winners include Jen Carroll and Michael McNally from London Grill in 2011 and David Wiederholt from the Capital Grille and Bobby Flay from Bobby’s Burger Palace in 2012. Prizes are awarded for Judges’ and People’s Choice.

Tickets are $75 each and include tastings from all participating restaurants, cocktails from Jim Beam, beer tastings from Dogfish Head brewery and scoops from Rita’s Water Ice.
