Northern Ireland-style Soda Bread

1. Combine and mix dry ingredients in a bowl, then add buttermilk. Using your hands, work the mixture together in the bowl, forming a loose ball, before turning out onto a flour-dusted surface.
2. Lightly knead the dough, being careful not to overwork it, into a circular shape about half an inch thick.
3. Once dough is formed, cut an X across the circle, forming four equal-sized farls, or pieces.
4. Cook each farl in a hot pan or on a hot griddle for 6-8 minutes on each side. The bread will rise to roughly twice its height while cooking.
5. Serve hot, slathered with butter, or topped with cheddar cheese, a fried egg, and sausage or bacon.
