Nice warm soup, and a pita party

La Salle Academy Most liked the soup because it "made them warm," and the stuffed pitas were a huge hit! The outcome is always the same, though: When the meal is prepared and ready to eat, they give thanks for the food and the friends with whom they are sharing the meal.

"Do any of you like tomato soup at home?" I asked. "I like tomato soup with grilled cheese!" said Ciera Cain. "Well, that's exactly what we're eating today, just a healthier version!"

When Renee Howard took a spoonful of the soup, she smiled brightly and almost fell off of her chair! She didn't say anything - just gave a "thumbs up" to everyone. No words were needed. This meal was that good.

Learning about new food products has been a steady interest for the group, but today it took a particularly endearing turn when Cyniah excitedly shared that she thought vinaigrette was a female vinegar. A quick French lesson on "ette" as a female word ending was discussed! The pitas were loved by all. Simply put, another favorite recipe!

It was so cold outside that we were all happy to be making soup. The soup got mixed reviews, only Nasya asked for seconds, but the paprika pitas went fast and everyone loved dunking them. We shared expectations of our traditional Thanksgiving celebrations while dining together. I'm thankful for the confidence and skills of all our students after just a few weeks together.

Our rambunctious class showed great focus and cooperation as they chopped, peeled, grated, seasoned, and brushed in unison. As we dined, the conversation turned to soups from their cultures at home: pho, choy, ramen and Moroccan soup. When Anishka Cuttino proclaimed, "This soup is better than ramen noodles!" she spoke volumes about our tomato soup. Clearly our students have blended nicely as a multicultural and opinionated group!

After we pulled the roasted tomatoes from the oven, Joannie Figueroa licked her fingers after scooping them into the pot and shouted, "Mmmmm! They taste sweet like candy!" The soup and paprika pitas were a huge hit. The girls said it reminded them of grilled cheese and tomato soup.

The cheese-stuffed pita breads were a big hit and were consumed in a blink. The chickpea and tomato soup was a step back in the appreciation of a fresh, nutritious, and tasty dish. As chickpeas were chased around in the bowls, the chatter focused on the salmon a few weeks ago. That was a big favorite!
