* Day of the Dead celebrations are in order this week. Union Taco (712 W. Girard Ave., 267-455-0445, uniontaco.com) celebrates from noon to 2 p.m. today with free tacos (one per guest). Verdad Restaurant & Tequila Bar (818 W. Lancaster Ave., Bryn Mawr, 610-520-9100, verdadrestaurant.com) ups the ante with free margaritas (one per guest, age 21 and over) from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and free tacos (one order of three per table) from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday.

* City Tap House (3925 Walnut St., 215-662-0105, citytaphouse.com) has a new executive chef, Chad Vetter, a Levittown native who's returned to the area from Sea Pines Resort in South Carolina, where he oversaw five restaurants. His approach is American regional, plus beer-infused dishes inspired by Beer Steward Andy Farrell's 60-plus tap beer list.

* Eat well now and invest in good meals to come from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 12 as Careers Through Culinary Arts (C-CAP) Philadelphia hosts "Ignite: Firing Up Tomorrow's Chefs," a tasting event at the Dorrance H. Hamilton Center for Culinary Enterprise (310 S. 48th St.) to raise funds for culinary scholarships and job training for local underserved youth.
