2012 Vendys: Best in truck food

If you've been around Penn's campus, Temple's campus, or LOVE Park, or one of the recent Night Markets, you know that the Philly food-truck scene has exploded.

You'll want to check out the second annual Vendys, coming to University City on July 28. There, a dozen of the city's best trucks - nominated by patrons - will compete for prizes and bragging rights. And beer is included in admission.

The Philly Vendys, benefiting the Food Trust, are an offshoot of the Urban Justice Center’s Street Vendor Project, which began in New York in 2005.

The battle is set for Saturday, July 28, 3 to 7 p.m. at The Lot @ 39th and Market.

Tickets for the Philadelphia Vendys, which is all-you-can-eat and includes beer and wine, can be purchased at http://phillyvendys2012.eventbrite.com for $55 in advance and $60 day of event.

Here are the competitors. Click for photos and info.

At last year's event in Northern Liberties, there were too many hipsters in fedoras--very annoying elitist crowd. Hopefully this year at The Lot the hipsters will stay away.

Arab "chicken over rice" (for lack of better description) on 17 in between Market and Chestnut should get some love too. They're literally one of the best carts in the city and may have one of the best lunches period. Very economical, fast, and fresh ingredients. I could literally eat there every day. I believe the name is New York Gyro, but you can't miss the place by the smells coming out of there. These guys put that weird "Falafel nazi" on 19 and JFK or market to shame.

Well, just because a brick and mortar has restaurant has a restroom and a sink does not mean they use it properly. Seinfeld fans may remember Poppy. However, I'm with you. I won't order from a truck. Where do they wash and where do they go to the bathroom? I saw a Mister Softee truck pull to the curb. All the doors were closed. Two girls wanted an ice cream and banged on the truck for a couple of minutes before he finally opened it. Imagine being in one of those trucks and hearing people bang on your truck. How long would it take you to respond? It wouldn't be long. So, what do you think that he was doing? #1 or #2?

Don't laugh. I had two Comcast guys at my house for several hours and the big fat guy went into his truck and took a dump. I heard him warn the other guy not to go in. It gives a new meaning to dump truck. God Bless Comcast for forbidding their employees to ask to use my bathroom.
Needless to say, I won't ever order from a truck.

Even the perceived "hipsters/elitist crowd" deserves delicious food truck delicacies. Let's all mellow out, support our entrepreneurs on wheels and focus on enjoying ourselves.
