Fresh in Fishtown
Calm and bright, this corner noshery, which is less than a year old, is a visual oasis for its block in Fishtown. And while the menu at Soup Kitchen Cafe is small, it is also easy, light, appealing, and creative. (Brownie-batter waffles? Yes, please.) There is, of course, soup, such as this cool, sweet cantaloupe version, tarted up with blueberry yogurt. The chunky chicken salad on dark bread comes with roasted tomatoes, while the heftier pulled-pork sandwich has apples, jalapeños, and a red cabbage slaw. Owner and chef Ben Bigler, a former attorney, is self-taught, and this is his new, way more fun, career. Look for dinner service soon.
