Doo Wop Back to the '50s Neon Night Tours

In 1955, a group of four Philadelphia men cut a pop-oriented rhythm-and-blues track called "When You Dance." The song quickly climbed the charts and its South Street writers, who called themselves The Turbans, became instantly recognizable for their background vocals: a three-part harmony of doo-wop. Doo-wop, a word widely thought to be popularized by the Turbans' hit song, grew from a combo of syllables into a decade-defining sound — one deeply tied to Philadelphia-area history and architecture. This Tuesday, board a bus back in time at the Doo Wop Experience museum for an immersive experience. Tour the Wildwoods to see the nightclubs where doo-wop singers performed and the buildings that incorporated their style. Learn about doo-wop history from a poodle-skirt-wearing tour guide, all while listening to the doo-wop classics that shaped the 1950s.

Morey's Piers Beach FootGolf

"FootGolf," the name of a nine-year-old but increasingly popular Dutch sport, is afforded the titular luxury of sounding almost exactly like what it is. The portmanteau, like the game itself, is a combination of "football" (as in, British for "soccer") and golf. Players compete to kick a soccer ball into a hole with the fewest number of kicks possible. This weekend is your chance to play and compete in one of the only FootGolf tournaments in the United States — on a beach! Head to the Wildwood sands with up to nine teammates to play and try to make par.

Fake Fest in A.C.

Tribute bands often get a lot of flak. Distinct from their music relatives, cover bands (which interpret hit songs of any band, and can be quite liberal in their renderings) are musicians who have dedicated their careers to mastering the playbook of a more established band. Some see them as failed musicians, but they are also, in a way, actors. A good tribute act masters more than the chords — its members are experts in technique, stage patter, mannerisms, and costume. This weekend you can judge for yourself: 10 faux acts, including facsimiles of Prince, Led Zeppelin, the Eagles, Johnny Cash, Bon Jovi, and Bruce Springsteen, will perform in a five-day affair at the Golden Nugget.

Lutheran Church of Our Lord Saviour Blueberry Fest

Blueberry season is halfway over, so make the most of it this weekend at the Blueberry Festival at Lutheran Church of Our Lord Saviour in Stone Harbor. Every blueberry dessert imaginable will be served up with scoops of Springer's ice cream over a backtrack of live piano from Cape May local Harry Otto. All the sweets are free — but any donations to the church will help to fund the Parish Nurse program, an endeavor headed by Cape May Hospital nurse Bonnie Kratzer that provides basic health services to community members at no cost.
