TV picks: ‘God Friended Me,’ ‘Poldark,’ ‘Speechless’ and more

God Friended Me. Better than it sounds — because it would almost have to be — this latest venture into TV spirituality stars Brandon Micheal Hall (The Mayor) as an atheist son of a preacher (Scandal's Joe Morton) whose lack of faith is tested when someone purporting to be God reaches out on social media, with all kinds of unexpected consequences. At least they didn't call it Touched by an Avatar.  8:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, CBS.

Masterpiece: Poldark. Fourth-season premiere of the show you might have hoped would sweep you away from current events will, in fact, touch on politics. (Sorry.) But at least they're the politics of 18th-century Cornwall, where Ross (Aidan Turner) has to stand by and see the evil George Warleggan (Jack Farthing) cause suffering in his role as the local member of Parliament. Let's just hope Ross and Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) can work out their problems. 9 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, WHYY12.

This Is Us. This is what NBC says about the episode titled, intriguingly, "The Philadelphia Story": "The Pearsons gather to support Kevin at his movie premiere. The teenage Big Three make college decisions." 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, NBC.

Frontline: Trump's Showdown. In a two-hour special, filmmaker Michael Kirk and his team (Putin's Revenge, Divided States of America) look at the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and President Trump's response to it. 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, WHYY12.

SEAL Team. Second-season premiere of the Navy SEAL drama starring Philadelphia's David Boreanaz — the only one of last season's military-themed network dramas to return — takes the Bravo Team to the Atlantic Ocean's Gulf of Guinea for a hostage rescue. 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, CBS.

Speechless. Two of TV's best family comedies move to Fridays. Speechless, which follows Fresh off the Boat, kicks off its third season with the first of two episodes in London. Monty Python's John Cleese guest-stars as the estranged father of Maya (Minnie Driver), to whom she'll be appealing for a loan to keep the recently evicted DiMeo family from remaining homeless. 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, ABC.
