So it all comes down to this: Scotty McCreery, 17, of Garner, N.C. vs. Lauren Alaina, 16, of Rossville, Georgia. Northeners need not apply.
I already know who will come out on top: Scotty. While Idol was busy flogging the new movie Super 8 last night, the film’s star Elle Fanning (Dakota’s little sister) giddily informed Ryan Seacrest that her six-year-old cousin had predicted right from the audition rounds that Opie Scotty would win.
Did you notice how the 13-year-old Elle towered over Seacrest?
Last night brought us the perhaps the weirdest guest performances in Idol history. And that’s saying something. Il Volo? A trio of freakish tenors singing a medley from the 19th century in their native Italian (see video below)? I’m guessing Zamfir, King of the Pan Flute was not available.
And Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls doing a lewd routine with dancers all dressed from the Wilma Flintstone couture line? That was, gulp, different.
Did you notice how absolutely shocked Haley Reinhart looked when Seasalt announced that Lauren had advanced over her? Poor kid had trouble walking.
Perhaps Haley thought that absolutely dominating Tuesday night’s competition would win her a spot in the finals. As if merit factored into Idol results.
Personally I thought she lost the moment she brought her father up on stage to play guitar on that Led Zeppelin song. It was a sweet gesture but the guy is no Jimmy Page. Plus he’s older than the three members of Il Volo combined.
Surprised to see Haley go? Who do you think wins next week?

Dakota and Elle's cousin is right. Scotty will win. Best Idol in years. Kevie Kev
I picked Lauren Alaina to win during the audition stage, just like Steven Tyler did. Scotty is goin down. jmazz84
A great season, but some stupid voting by America. James Durbin is way better than Lauren and Scotty. Ferrell31
I agree with Kevie. Scotty is the best in years. Disco Dave
