McKayla Maroney (and her scowl) go viral

Maroney is not happy with her results

You say you’ve invented a non-polluting car that runs on air? McKayla is not impressed.

American Olympic vaulter McKayla Maroney, 16, has become an international sight gag because of her sour reaction to winning a silver medal when she was favored to win the gold.

Her petulance on the medal stand has made her an inescapable and hilarious internet meme, thanks to Galvin Alaoen, a New York blogger who created the Tumblr page, “McKayla is Not Impressed.”

It’s kind of taken off from there. The concept is simple. We see McKayla giving her scowl of disapproval to any number of natural (the Taj Mahal) and unnatural (Kanye and Kim) wonders.

Take a look at the page which is now sprouting countless imitations.

It’s so perfect even McKayla is a fan. She tweeted: “This tumblr is kinda funny...Made me laugh.”

Notice she didn’t say she was impressed.

Silver wasn't good enough for her, and she didn't want to be a good sport about it, either. Perfect definition of a spoiled, coddled athlete.

Little McKayla needs to learn what the Olympics are truly about - sportsmanship. It is understandable how she is disappointed over not winning the gold, however, she needs to learn how to be gracious in defeat, not just in victory. She has noone to blame but herself for her 2nd place finish. A lot of other athletes would be ecstatic with that result.

IT IS A SHAME THAT SHE DOES NOT REALIZE THAT SHE MADE A FOOL OF HERSELF IN FRONT OF THE WORLD.
OR IS IT THAT SHE DOES NOT CARE. BOTTOM LINE IS THAT SHE IS A DISGRACE TO THE CONCEPT
OF SPORTMANSHIP. HOPEFULLY, SHE WILL GROW UP. I HOPE SHE IS NOT IN THE 2016 GAMES!!!!

I don't really have a problem with it. She had a moment where her disappointment showed throug. I like that she had bigger expectations. Frowning never hurt anyone.

people are giving her hell for this? she's 16, she wanted to win the gold, and she didn't. She worked harder than any of you ever have to do it and this was probably he only shot

CHZXXX - stop shouting! You probably never get out of your basement, let alone work harder than seems humanly possible to achieve something. She didn't make a fool of herself - she showed her disappointment. And please, she's a kid.

This is not newsworthy. Is it a slow news day? There should be a few muggings or murders to report somewhere in Philly

First, thanks Lulu. There is something fundamentally amiss about a poster who feels compelled to respond in caps. Further, anyone who has ever had a 16 year old daughter knows that look well. As annoying as she may seem, she's still a kid...give her a break (should I have capitalized that?)

The Olympics have not been about good sportsmanship since Munich. She was disappointed in her performance, rightly so....good for her.

It's perfectly natural for her to be disappointed in her performance, but it's wrong of her stand there, on the medal stand, scowling and covering her medal. It IS poor sportsmanship.

I wonder about people who justify her behavior. The winner tried to hug her and she looked at her like she was diseased. Typical for how many of our children are raised these days - nothing matters but being the best. That is really sad.
