Weekend TV picks

This week, we feature the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, “Middle of Nowhere” and more.

* 2014 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS. 9 p.m. Sunday, MTV.

The main reason to watch MTV's parade of pop stars? Beyonce will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award and perform. She famously announced her pregnancy on the show in 2011. With rumors swirling of marital troubles with husband Jay Z, can we expect another announcement? Iggy Azalea, Nicki Minaj, Usher and Maroon 5 also perform.

* MIDDLE OF NOWHERE. Netflix.

Ava DuVernay, the director of the upcoming Martin Luther King biopic "Selma," is bound for cinema glory. Netflix just added "Middle of Nowhere," her stunning film about a woman (a breakout performance by Emayatzy Corinealdi) left behind while her husband (Omari Hardwick) is in prison. Stream it now.

* DOCTOR WHO. 8 p.m. Saturday, BBC America.

Peter Capaldi begins his tenure as the Twelfth Doctor on the long-running and beloved Brit sci-fi series. Anglophiles may know Capaldi from his hilariously foulmouthed Malcolm Tucker in "The Thick of It."

* TRUE BLOOD. 9 p.m. Sunday, HBO.

Say goodbye to the sexy, blood-soaked vampires of Bon Temps. The supernatural series bows after seven seasons.
