Dan DeLuca's Mix Picks: Elliott Smith, Amy Helm, Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Elliott Smith, Either / Or: Expanded Edition. 20th-anniversary release of the third solo album by the prototypically wounded '90s songwriter. It vaulted him to fame after Gus Van Sant used three of the album’s fragile, melodic songs in 1997's Good Will Hunting, six years before Smith died of a (probably) self-inflicted knife wound. On Kill Rock Stars records.

Deafheaven. San Francisco black-metal band known for its passages of transcendent beauty amid monumental walls of noise, and revered for its 2013 album Sunbather. Monday at Theatre of Living Arts.

Amy Helm. Former Ollabelle roots singer -- and Levon’s daughter -- begins a three-consecutive-Wednesdays residency with her band. This week at MilkBoy Philly.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The South African a cappella group, whose mellifluous choral arrangements first came to the attention of Western ears on Paul Simon’s 1986 Graceland, touring behind the new Walking in the Footsteps of Our Fathers. Wednesday at World Cafe Live.

Waxahatchee. Intimate solo club show for West Philly songwriter Katie Crutchfield, topping a strong triple bill with quietly powerful songwriter Julie Byrne and Philadelphia harpist Mary Lattimore.  Wednesday at Johnny Brenda’s.
