Into the north Historian Hampton Sides has written acclaimed books about frontiersman Kit Carson, the rescue of American POWS in World War II, and the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In his new book, In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette, he looks at a doomed 19th-century U.S. naval expedition to the North Pole and its remarkable tale of survival.
