A brilliant movie (in gorgeous black and white) about life in a small Northern German village in the years leading up to World War One. It does not "depict the emergence" of the Nazis, but it does suggest that the cultural beliefs of this part of German society and the oppressive relations at work and in the family helped bring it about. Although much of what the movie reveals is creepy, it is always tactful in what it shows - and it is as enthralling as any movie I've seen in years. It takes a while to be sure a film is a durable masterpiece, but I think this one is worth betting on. - Sam Kaplan
