Spend the day at the Emlen Physick Estate listening to blues and sipping on cold beers. The Victorian-era Mansion is hosting its second annual all-day outdoor festival, featuring beers from local breweries — including Cape May, 7 Mile, Ludlam Island, and Slack Tide — as well as sangria and spirits from Sunset Liquors. Want to bring the kids? There will also be vendors selling crepes, BBQ, and roast beef, along with a selection of lawn games, a bubble pond, and a circus.

The Little Egg Harbor Library is, like most libraries, filled with books –– but it occasionally offers the odd film screening. Curl up with a movie at the library Friday, with the screening of Fences, the Oscar-nominated adaptation of August Wilson's famous play, starring Denzel Washington and a powerhouse performance by Academy Award winner Viola Davis.

Not every race is about winning. This one is about finishing together and for a good cause. Islandkids is the largest youth triathlon in the Mid-Atlantic, featuring a 100-meter ocean swim (parallel to the beach), a 5K bike on Avalon Avenue, a 1K beach run — and it's coming to Avalon to raise money for Weisman's Children's Rehabilitation Hospital, the only pediatric rehabilitation hospital in South Jersey. The top five participants in every age group win awards, but every racer receives an athletes bag of goodies, including a medal and a T-shirt. Family members can put squabbles aside and come together to compete for the Fastest Family Award. After the big event, everyone can party with music and food.

"The day is coming when a single carrot, freshly observed, will set off a revolution," predicted painter Paul Cêzanne. Join chef Ruth Latorre, Academy of Culinary Arts pastry professor, for the first revolt in root vegetables: her seminar on how to use carrots in savory and sweet baking.

Take a three-mile jog through a wooded trail, along two ponds, around a vineyard, and finish with a cold, fruity glass of sangria (free with registration). Depending on your speed, the 5K race takes less than an hour, but the after-party goes on for 2½.
