Gary Thompson: Ice Cube's 'Friday' celebrates 14th anniversary

For some reason, they're releasing a 14th anniversary edition of Ice Cube's comedy "Friday."

Why a 14th anniversary?

You might as well ask why they made a sequel to "Crank," but the most high-profile release this week is indeed "Crank 2," featuring Jason Statham as a guy who has to keep shocking himself with power cables and lamp cords to keep his heart going, while he performs some kind of neo-labor of Hercules.

Of the two, I'd take "Friday," a rambunctious day-in-the-'hood comedy featuring Cube (he co-wrote it) and Chris Tucker, and marking one of the earlier directing jobs for F. Gary Gray.

The special edition features a new "Friday" featurette, an introduction from Cube, plus Q&As with Gray and producer Patricia Charbonnet. There are also music videos from Cube and Dr. Dre.

Also, the price is right - only $15.
