Tom Petty in grave condition at LA hospital
The singer was found in his California home.
Update: While CBS News had initially reported that the Los Angeles Police Department had confirmed Tom Petty's death, the LAPD has tweeted that they have no new information on Petty:
TMZ, who initially reported Petty's critical status, reported he is still "clinging to life."
Musician Tom Petty has reportedly been taken off life support after being rushed to a hospital on Sunday while in cardiac arrest, TMZ reports.
According to the site, the "Free Fallin'" singer, 66, was found unconscious in his home in Malibu, California on Sunday. Petty was then taken to UCLA Santa Monica hospital, and while his condition is unknown, the gossip site reports that the singer was "critical from the moment he was found."
The incident follows the conclusion of a lengthy tour from Petty, which wrapped up at the Hollywood Bowl last Monday.
The last time Petty played Philadelphia was a sold out show in July at the Wells Fargo Center. Petty played two shows — one at the beginning of the month, the other at the end. Of the former, Dan DeLuca wrote:
Petty, a Florida native, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame alongside his backing band, the Heartbreakers, in 2002. The group's biggest hits include tracks such as "American Girl," "I won't Back Down," and "Runnin' Down a Dream."
The group has become one of rock's most popular acts since debuting with a self-titled release in 1976. Since that album's release, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have earned three Grammy Awards and 18 nominations, among other accolades.
