The “Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk” singer will join the POPS for the Kimmel performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan 19. In addition to the POPS and Wainwright, the evening will feature a pre-show performance from the Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus, as well as a post-show reception benefiting the William Way LGBT Community Center.
Tickets for the event are on sale now, and run between $35 and $146, depending on seating. VIP tickets, which include access to the post-show reception, are priced at $500. Wainwright is expected to attend the reception, according to a release.
Wainwright will perform alongside the POPS at the Kimmel’s Verizon Hall, where music director Michael Krajewski will conduct the show. The evening will feature the full, 65-piece orchestra backing Wainwright’s unique blend of pop, classical, and rock.
“Rufus Wainwright is an unbelievable talent,” Philly POPS president and CEO Frank Giordano said in a release. “He has a great following in Philadelphia and we’re honored to perform with him.”
Wainwright, of course, is no stranger to Philadelphia, having most recently played in town late last month at The Foundry at The Fillmore. A.D. Amorosi, writing for the Inquirer, described that show as “tightly staged” and called it proof that “less is always so much more with Wainwright.”
The musician’s latest album, Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespeare Sonnets, was released in April last year.
