Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston’s Philadelphia-shot remake of the hit 2011 French film The Intouchables will put the City of Brotherly Love back on the silver screen in early 2018.
Filmed partially in Philadelphia and at Sun Center Studios in Delaware County, the movie follows Cranston as billionaire Phillip Lacasse, who becomes paralyzed following a hang-gliding accident. Cranston’s character hires Hart’s character Dell, a convicted criminal who is looking for work, to be his caretaker, and the two form a friendship that has both men “bridging their differences and gaining invaluable wisdom in the process,” as Variety reports.
In addition to Hart and Cranston, the Weinstein Company project also stars Nicole Kidman, Julianna Margulies, and Aja Naomi King. Neil Burger, of Limitless and The Illustionist fame, directs.
The original 2011 French-language film starred François Cluzet and Omar Sy, and earned more than $400 million at the box office worldwide. As Deadline reports, that film is considered one of the highest-grossing non-English-language films ever.
On a visit to the film’s Delaware County set in March, movie critic Gary Thompson talked to Hart, who said this was his most dramatic role to date. “It’s a challenge,” Hart admits. “But it’s so much easier because of the person Bryan is. The acting chemistry is there, but, as you can see, when the cameras are not rolling, the personality is there. You are around good energy, and you get good results.”
Cranston and Hart were in town in February and March to film portions of the film, and were spotted tooling around town in a Ferrari and filming at the Center for Architecture and Design. The pair were also active outside the shoot while in town, with Hart performing a number of surprise stand-up gigs and, and Hart alternately messing with TMZ cameramen, eating steak, and slapping Tony Parker’s butt.
Hart was recently back in town to promote his new book, I Can’t Make This Up: Life Lessons, and the Parkway Central Library this month. Philadelphia, meanwhile, will celebrate our very fist Kevin Hart Day on July 6.
