Melania Trump settles libel suits with major British news outlet

She had filed the suits over a report that the modeling agency for which she worked in the 1990s also was an escort service.

First Lady Melania Trump has settled a pair of libel suits against the London-based Daily Mail for an apology and unspecified damages.

Mrs. Trump had filed the suits in London over an article last year asserting the professional modeling agency for which she worked in the 1990s also was an escort service.

"We accept that these allegations about Mrs Trump are not true and we retract and withdraw them. We apologise to Mrs Trump for any distress that our publication caused her," the Mail said in a statement. "To settle Mrs Trump's two lawsuits against us, we have agreed to pay her damages and costs."

The amount of damages was not specified. Sky News, without citing any sources, said, "the total payment of damages and costs is believed to come to less than $3m (£2.4m)."
