Carrey: Deeply saddened

Jim Carrey, 53, on Tuesday spoke up about his gf of three years, Cathriona White, who died Monday of an apparent suicide. Carrey said he was deeply saddened by her death.

"She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving . . . was all that sparkled."

Mimi Lien wins genius grant

You may have seen her work at a performance of BalletX, Pig Iron Theatre Company, or at FringeArts. Perhaps you noticed but not really. Set design is not the reason we go to the theater, but in the hands of a genius, it can make a huge difference.

Indeed, Mimi Lien is now recognized as a genius, having been named a 2015 MacArthur Fellow with 23 other achievers. As a trained set designer and architect, she "envelops the audience in a specific mood or atmosphere," the MacArthur Foundation said. In some works, she "choreographs the movement of set pieces so that they become participants in the dramatic action."

Lien did a big production of Lost in the Meadows at Longwood Garden in mid-September. Want to see her work for yourself? She is designing the sets for a new Nicolo Fonte full-length piece for BalletX, which will be performed Nov. 18-22 at the Wilma Theater.

Pope Francis: The ratings

More proof, if anyone needed it, that Pope Francis is a star. Local Nielsen ratings for the pope's Sept. 26-27 visit confirm His Holiness is an eyeball magnet. Coverage of his visit often led ratings throughout the weekend, running strong in the mornings, and peaking at the outdoor Mass on Sunday afternoon on the Ben Franklin Parkway. On Sunday, NFL day, as you might expect, the Eagles-Jets game outperformed Francis 2-to-1 or more in ratings. Ah, but Francis equalled or outperformed other NFL games, such as the Steelers-Rams and Bears-Seahawks. Near the end of the Mass, he was rocking a 13.2 rating (of all local households with a TV, 13.2 percent were tuned to him) and a 20 share (of all total TV sets in use, 20 percent were tuned to him) - two different ways of saying, "Pontifex can bring the points!"
