Dolly Parton supports goddaughter Miley Cyrus: ‘It’s not easy being young’

Everyone from Sinead O’Connor to Bette Midler has offered advice to Miley Cyrus. So what does the young singer’s godmother Dolly Parton have to say about Cyrus’s twerking and tongue-wagging ways?

In a recent interview with the London Evening Standard, Parton, 67, spoke out about Cyrus’s recent headline-grabbing behavior, saying ”she’s just trying to find her own place and wings and learn to fly.”

With such a close and personal connection to Cyrus, Parton has watched her evolution closely.

“I’ve loved her through the years and watched her grow up, and I’ve seen how smart she is and how talented she is,” Parton said. “I don’t think people really realize yet what a great singer and writer she really is.”

This isn’t the first time Parton, has talked openly about Cyrus. In a 2011 Parade interview, she said “I remember myself at her age. We’ve all been a bit too hard on her. I hope she holds it together because there’s a world of things she can do. She should keep an eye on things and make wise decisions”

While industry vets like O’Connor, Midler and even Katy Perry have berated Cyrus and her decisions, Parton defended them. ”It’s not easy being young. It’s hard to know what to do. You’ve almost got to sacrifice your damn soul just to get anything done.”

Last month on The Today Show, Cyrus revealed that all of her recent antics have gone “exactly as planned.” She went on to tell Matt Lauer, “I mean, it’s a month later and we’re still talking about it.”

Now, more than two months since her infamous VMA appearance, Parton echoed her goddaughter’s sentiment and said ”I know that she has thought this all through. We’ll let her go and do her own thing.”

With all of her support, could there be a Parton-Cyrus collaboration in the future? According to Parton, it’s a real possibility. “I would love to do some duets with her. I would love to sing with her and write with her because I think she is so gifted.”
