Dan Gross: Stern: Rehire Lane!

HOWARD STERN says that CBS 3 should apologize to Alycia Lane and give her back her job.

On his Sirius Satellite Radio show yesterday, Stern, a friend of Lane's boyfriend, Chris Booker, formerly of Q102, said he used to think Lane was a bit nutty when she complained that she didn't understand how personal stuff about her was getting in the papers, but now he feels for her.

Stern believes that the federal charge Monday against Lane's former co-anchor Larry Mendte, alleging that he hacked her private e-mails 537 times this year vindicates her. CBS 3 should admit it made a mistake in firing her, he said.

Paul Rosen, Lane's attorney, told us yesterday he was unaware of Stern's remarks, but "they are my sentiments exactly."

"If they did the right thing that any quality employer should do, they would apologize to her for the harm caused by their employee and her co-anchor, and offer her the job Larry took away from her," Rosen continued by e-mail.

Rosen said that if Lane went back on air, "the old ratings she garnered will be back and her reputation can begin its comeback. It is a win-win for the station and Alycia, and puts the emphasis on the real criminal in this macabre story of Larry's jealous criminal obsession to destroy Alycia."

Mendte's attorney Michael A. Schwartz declined comment, and a CBS 3 spokeswoman declined to address Stern's remarks on Lane.

Hare's movie shoots in Thailand

Roxborough native Jeff Hare just wrapped "Bitter/Sweet," a film he shot in Thailand in the cities of Bangkok and Krabi. Hare's film stars James Brolin and Kip Pardue. Hare's last film, "Checking Out," premiered at the 2005 Philadelphia Film Festival.

Soap stars hanging in Cherry Hill

"All My Children" actress Bobbie Eakes, and Kathy Brier and Kassie DePaiva, of "One Life to Live," have been at Cherry Hill's Four Star Studios of late rehearsing and recording sessions to prepare for their upcoming show "Divas of Daytime TV," which opens at the Canal Room in New York on Aug. 16. Ricky Paull Goldin, of "All My Children," hosts the live show, produced by Creative Entertainment's Mark Stevens of the Dovells and created by Marvin Segel, son of QVC founder Joe Segel. Al Martino hoping

for a royal visit

South Philly born crooner Al Martino is hopeful that Queen Elizabeth, a longtime fan of his, will finally get to see him perform when he plays in London in September. The velvet-voiced entertainer also told us recently that he's proud of his daughter Alison Martino, who is keeping busy in California where she has worked on TV shows, including "Trading Spaces" and "Intervention."

Fattahs ride bikes, celebrate

Congressman Chaka Fattah, his NBC 10 anchorwoman wife Renee Chenault-Fattah and the couple's daughters, Chandler and Cameron, were seen riding bikes around the Lincoln Memorial in Washington Monday. Fattah's family was there to help him celebrate the 10th anniversary of GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), which helps low-income students attend college, and which will soon be expanded, pending approval by the House and Senate. *

Now Dan, no one called you to tell you they saw Fattah riding bikes in DC. I believe you got that from info from a pr person or the organization mentioned in the article. You should be careful writing that kind of stuff. One day you will end up being proved wrong. Same thing happened to Mitch Albom.

Once again, Dan Gross puts on the angel's halo and says he has nothing to do with Mendte's snooping...how many tips did you get from Mendte, pal?

Good call in making sure this story is all about Howard Stern thinking Alycia should be rehired. It just wouldn't be cool for you to diss the source of all your juicy columns.
Posted by snook65 07:32 AM, 07/23/2008
Alycia should continue on with her case, win it and find a better job in another market. If she's smart she won't let them treat her unfairly again. CBS3 can pound sand!

Gross is a no talent hack who should be slinging hash somewhere in kensington...hey, dan, how does it feel to be so insiginificant that you have to write a gossip column. loser.
Posted by rabbit23 07:54 AM, 07/23/2008
Dan, will you be addressing your role is this or no? it had to be clear you were receiving emails and information that was received illegally. that seems wrong even for a gossip columnist. and certainly makes you complicit in a crime. you clearly have no integrity whatsoever. shame on you.

Lane and her lawyer should be targeting YOU - mr. dan gross!!! What deal did you cut to save your own rear?
Posted by James 11:45 AM, 07/23/2008
Dan, I would rather make a living writing about news than writing about gossip which is hearsay!
Posted by Mutt 12:02 PM, 07/23/2008
Just because Mendte is a scumbag doesn't excuse the fact that Lane is a train wreck. Besides, she contacted the governor for help--a big journalistic no no--when she was arrested for drunken antics in NYC. They'd be fools to hire her again.

People are right, Dan you're a hack with no conscinious, no journalistic ethics. I suspect you never questioned Larry about where he was getting such intricate, detailed information. I also suspect that you took this "source" on face value, never trying to double source the information. You simply went with a guy who said "guess what I heard?" Gossip that affected someones reputation and life in a very negative way. I'll bet you didn't care because it was soooo juicy of a story. You've done it before to other people and I suspect you'll do it again. Yes, your information were right. But in reporting those stories you violated every aspect of journalistic ethics with regards to source reporting. I guess gossip reporting is just that, damned those who you hurt or malign in the name of a juicy story. You should be ashamed and so should the Daily News for not holding you to the standards of real journalists.

By mid-August, many backyard cooks find the thrill has gone off the grill. If that's true for you - if the idea of cooking and eating outdoors is not as enchanting as it seemed in early June - maybe it's time for a menu shake-up.
