Urinating on your rapist, Colorado's HB 1226, and the #LiberalTips2AvoidRape trend

On Tuesday, #LiberalTips2AvoidRape began trending on Twitter. Here's the backstory:

On Monday, Colorado's House voted to pass HB 1226, which would prevent anyone—including people with permits—to carry concealed weapons on campuses of public universities. State Rep. Joe Salazar came under fire for statements he made during the debate over the bill, which indicated that he felt that fear of rape on campus should not be the motivating factor for the House to vote against the bill.

“It’s why we have call boxes, it’s why we have safe zones, it’s why we have the whistles," Salazar said. "Because you just don’t know who you’re gonna be shooting at. And you don’t know if you feel like you’re gonna be raped, or if you feel like someone’s been following you around or if you feel like you’re in trouble when you may actually not be, that you pop out that gun and you pop -- pop around at somebody.”

The bill passed 34-31. Three Democrats broke rank and voted against it. The University of Colorado message went up. Cue social media backlash.

Then, a few hours after the bill passed, a message was posted to the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs website advising its female students on possible ways to help protect themselves from potential sexual assault. The tips include:

6.   Tell your attacker that you have a disease or are menstruating.

7.    Vomiting or urinating may also convince the attacker to leave you alone.

UCCS started to take some heat on social media sites. Then, conservatives began to chime in on Twitter using the hashtag #LiberalTips2AvoidRape, turning the advisory message into a punch line.

Now, it's the typical liberal vs. conservative split on Twitter, with GOP supporters tweeting #LiberalTips2AvoidRape jokes and calling out State Rep. Joe Salazar while Democrats condemn conservatives for using the hashtag in the first place. [International Business Times]

The full message from UCCS is posted below.

Updated message from February 18, 2013 at 6:30pm from the Department of Public Safety:

The ten points of information below were used in a context supplemented with additional information during the in-class training covered in the Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) class.  The R.A.D. class is offered free of charge as a public service to women who are part of the greater UCCS community.

Rape Aggression Defense Systems (RAD Systems) is a hands-on, women only self defense and risk reduction education program designed to teach women realistic ways to defend and protect oneself from sexual and abductive assaults.  RAD is an international organization of certified law enforcement instructors.

What To Do If You Are Attacked

These tips are designed to help you protect yourself on campus, in town, at your home, or while you travel.  These are preventative tips and are designed to instruct you in crime prevention tactics.

  1. Be realistic about your ability to protect yourself.
  2. Your instinct may be to scream, go ahead!  It may startle your attacker and give you an opportunity to run away.
  3. Kick off your shoes if you have time and can't run in them.
  4. Don't take time to look back; just get away.
  5. If your life is in danger, passive resistance may be your best defense.
  6. Tell your attacker that you have a disease or are menstruating.
  7. Vomiting or urinating may also convince the attacker to leave you alone.
  8. Yelling, hitting or biting may give you a chance to escape, do it!
  9. Understand that some actions on your part might lead to more harm.
  10. Remember, every emergency situation is different.  Only you can decide which action is most appropriate.

When should she pull the gun? When someone US following to close? When a guy looks scary? When he startled her? When he speaks to her?

As far as u know, these guys dont exactly give a warning. And if she can't win the struggle in the first place, how is she going to win the struggle over the gun?

Now what? She gets shot and the guy has a weapon for next time?

As much as gun lovers cling to the whole protection theory, it only works when you are given enough time, which is rarely ever, in any crime.

But yea. Mr. Noble man, how about you take a bullet to the gut, and then you can declare how was worth because she was strong and independent.

Cause, you know....according to you, a woman needs a gun to be strong and independent. I think maybe you laid the worst insult to women out, no?

How much training do you think cops get? 99% of them only practice with their gun once a year when it's time for qualifications. Most gun owners I know practice monthly if not weekly. I'd trust a citizen with a gun more then I would most cops. Here is a perfect example, look at the cop in western PA who shot his partner 3 times with his assualt rifle, or the TRAINING OFFICER in Baltimore who shot a cadet in the head while PLAYING around with his firearm.

Laws (and the constitution) are made to be changed. The Constitution was made to be a living document. The fact is the 2nd amendment was written to guarantee Americans can obtain guns in the case of a war to form militias. There has been one foreign war here since the constitution and that was in 1812. The fact is we have a standing army and reserves to prevent the need for untrained individuals to take up arms. Why can't we be smart enough as a society to understand that (much like the Bible) the Constitution was written by people years ago when many of the issues we face today didn't exist. We need to stop using these little scenarios to justify guns, when in almost every scenario untrained individuas with guns would cause more life loss than just controlling guns. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are really the true rights afforded to us by this country, and the fact is untrained people with guns threaten my right to live.

Your a dope! Evil people are the only thing that threaten your right to live. I truely feel sorry for dopes like yourself. The second amendment is to protect each citizen from the tyranny of goverment. You know....the founding fathers and the revolution over England. Read a history book dope! Typical liberal!

Then go through the correct process to amend the Constitution. If it fails that process, you don't get your change.

Everyone settle down. It's not like any of these women are getting pregnant. I mean, scientifically speaking your body can't produce a child when it's the result of rape. DUH!

Here's the solution, dont go to college in Colorado. You have the right to carry your firearm does not supercede my safety or my well being. That is what gun owners need to think about. I am sorry, your need to feel safe is no greater than mine. Keep your gun in your home.

Your right to live in fansasy land does not supercede my right to carry my legally obtained and permitted firearm in a very dangerous real world. I will continue to carry and you liberals can pee your pants and throw up all over yourselves hoping your attacker will walk away. what dopes!

Nothing new here. Typical Liberal hypocrite. Compared to Obama's all male administration (and golf partners) or Al Gore, he's small potatoes.

Worst part was the politicians passed this even though the majority of Colorodians said they did not agree with it. The politicians don't even listen to the people they work for.
