Esquire profiles Navy SEAL that killed Osama bin Laden

Osama bin Laden (AP Photo)

On May 1, 2011, a member of the United States Navy SEAL Team Six shot and killed Osama bin Laden. Now, nearly two years later, Esquire has published a profile on the man who pulled the trigger.

"The Man Who Killed Osama bin Laden... Is Screwed," starts with this sentence:

The man who shot and killed Osama bin Laden sat in a wicker chair in my backyard, wondering how he was going to feed his wife and kids or pay for their medical care.

It's impossible to read that sentence and not drop everything to read the read the remainder of Esquire's lengthy profile of the Navy SEAL who fired the shots that killed Osama bin Laden. Phil Bronstein delves into the life of the man who made history in 2011 and what's waiting for he and his family in the future.
"They [SEAL command] told me they could get me a job driving a beer truck in Milwaukee" under an assumed identity. Like Mafia snitches, they would not be able to contact their families or friends. "We'd lose everything."

This is what you need to read today. [Esquire]

theses articles are ridiculous. everyone knows the seals didn't kill anyone and bin laden died of kidney issues in 2003. this whole narrative is hollywood scripted.

"Thomas Jefferson knew this when he warned of the threat to liberty with a standing army....
    — Professor1982"

I hear your Republican friends are prepared to exhume Jefferson and run him for President in 2016 since he's guaranteed to say nothing about the 47%. Professor, I read your garbage observations on here from time to time and believe you must be married to the ugliest woman in the world whose lot in life is to be married to the dumbest man.

Great job getting Bin Laden! Now stop whining!. Every service member with 16 years of service knows EXACTLY WHAT THE CRITERIA ARE TO QUALIFY FOR A REGULAR PENSION, OR DISABILITY PENSION, and every other dang benefit out there. I guarantee you had options to remain on the payroll while YOUR disability claim was evaluated, and with YOUR pick of assignment too. Nobody threw YOU out of the Navy!!! You made a rash decision, and tried to take a short cut, assuming nobody would dare deny, or even delay you because of your extraordinary heroism. Well, the regs are the regs. There is a published process for everything. God bless you for your work and dedication, but you made a bad decision. Stop blaming The Navy, the DOD, or anyone else.

You have to be dumb and asleep at the wheel to think they killed Osama. He has been dead for years. Funny how they couldn't even show a body.

I have found some military people know how to work the system and some say abuse the system. A guy I know went to one of the service academies, and just recently "retired" after 22 years. His final salary was $120,000 , plus free medical benefits for him and his stepchildren. Now mind you the closest he ever came seeing military action in 22 years was working at Centcom, in Tampa! He spent his last three years pushing paperwork at a desk job after getting "kicked upstairs" after doing a crappy job at his previous command. Those three years were mainly spent lining up a post retirement job with a defense contractor where he now makes $200,000 selling services to all his previous military buddies. Plus he has a $66,000 post tax per year pension and free medical insurance for life. So frankly when I see a guy who was on the front lines, truly risking his life, doing the most dangerous work in the military get kicked to the curb while this other guy is making $266,000 per year with freed medical it frankly makes me SICK!

He at least deserves the reward money!

When I was in - during the Vietnam era - they used to tell us, "if Uncle Sam wanted you to have a family, he would have issued you one." Seriously, a military career is not conducive to family life. Too bad people aren't able to see it.

I would sure hope this guy isn't scr3wed. I don't know specifics on what his resume would look like, based on the article, but if I'm looking at resumes and I see 10 years as a Spec Op, I know the individual is highly trained, extremely motivated, aggressive, and can think both strategically and tactically very quickly. They may not have the specific experience, and even if they don't I'm thinking, how can I find something for this person to do? In other words, Spec Op warriors can't come out before their 20, and be found to be unemployable. If half of their workers showed a quarter of the motivation a Spec Op warrior demonstrates, an executive would be gleeful.

No sympathy as he made the choice himself. As reported this AM, he IS eligible for VA healthcare something he didn't seem to know. Given how all services bend over backwards with discharge transition briefings, if he missed that bit of news that is his problem. No job? He should have thought about that before leaving. Same with healthcare for his family. Long delay on disability? Again, a known problem for all vets the last couple years. Great job he did while in, but no reason to start splitting hairs to put certain vets ahead of others in the benefits line.

I want to explain something to you racists. It's not Obama's fault, again. I did not vote for him nor do I support him, but you idiots who keep listening to Beck, Palin, and Rush will get dumber by the minute. Obama increased VA spending after Bush cut funding, I don't see one comment about that, just comments rehashing stuff that isn't true. Maybe you people need to spend less time whining and complaining and get out there and do something for your fellow man..after all, being hateful hypocrites helps nobody except makes Beck, Rush, Coulter and Palin richer than they deserve to be..hate is money, and business is god

He should have stayed the extra years to get his 20 years which generated medical benefits and a small pension. As a veteran he still has access to VA medical benefits but that doesn't help other family members. If I can assume he was counseled before he left the military, then I must say leaving so short of retirement was not a good idea. Leaving that all behind including his role in killing Bin Laden, he has the same burden as any other returning veteran - making a transition to civilian life, finding a job, and supporting his family. He has a vast array of educational benefits which he can take advantage of. I wish him success - and the same for all other veterans. Thank you for protecting us.

@jimmymack - read the darn article. He's burnt out and no longer gets an adrenaline rush in gunfights...which he is smart enough to know is a good way to get himself or his teammates killed.

What's funny is the "Barry" haters can't spell, make racist comments and ridiculous leaps to blame him for policies he didn't write. They revel their stupidity in every post. What's astounding is the amount of uneducated dim-wits who agree. "Professor," you are by far the dumbest. Texas Yankee well said!!

You people criticizing him for not staying 20 years should be ashamed of yourselves. If you have a military job jockeying a desk for 20 years yeah, you know all your benefits and didn't have to work too hard for it. These guys are constantly at the ready, and deploy in hours. Its a job that few can handle for an extended amount of time. They are trained to a razor's edge and are able to handle any situation. The stress alone of being a SEAL is beyond the grasp of most people. There are only roughly 2500 active SEALs. Its a small community. Thanks to all our veterans--you the everyday reminder that freedom isn't free and thank you for your service. Side note: my father is a Vietnam veteran so I have an understanding of what vets go through and appreciate their service.
