What's cooking If we're going to trust anyone with recommendations of 1,000 Foods to Eat Before You Die, it's the sensational critic Mimi Sheraton. Her book ranges around the globe, detailing where to get the best cuisine and how to make it. Some examples: French pigeon en encrapaudine (i.e., split to resemble a crapaud, or toad); Hungarian hideg meggyleves (cold sour-cherry soup); Bulgarian shopska salad; Japanese kasutera sponge cake; Australian pie floaters (meat pies topped with tomato sauce and set in a bowl of pea soup); and good old American standards such as Thomas' English muffins and frozen Milky Way candy bars. We're thinking cheesesteaks are in there somewhere, but we're not sure about scrapple (though Vegemite made it, so . . . ). Sheraton discusses her list at 7:30 p.m. at the Free Library, 1901 Vine St. Tickets are $15; $7 students. Call 215-567-4341.
