Weekend picks for PIFA

Today marks the first day of the month-long, 2013 Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA). Here’s your guide to the events you don’t wants to miss, this weekend.

  • Dance Space - Saturday, March 30 (8:00 p.m.)

    Savion Glover, legendary tap dance prodigy, presents a world-premiere work for PIFA for one night only. Low lights, fiber optic stars, and environmental sounds create an “ethereal atmosphere” that will immerse audiences in Glover’s solo tap performance. The performance opens with a performance featuring CeCeLia Birt, J. Donald Dumpson, Justin Guarini and Elisabeth Stevens.

    The St. Matthew Passion - Saturday, March 30 (8:00 p.m.)

    Bach’s setting of the Gospel of St. Matthew originally premiered on Good Friday in 1727. It featured solo voices, children’s choir, double choir and a double orchestra. This Easter weekend, conductor Yannick Nezet-Seguin re-introduced this passion oratorio with the Philadelphia Orchestra featuring the Westminster Symphonic Choir and the American Boychoir. Catch it for its final night this Saturday.

    Daringly High/Trapeze Classes - Saturday/Sunday, March 30/31

    Inspired by the “daringly high” mini dress model Jean Shrimpton wore to Derby Day in 1965—shocking the Australian establishment—Fly School Circus is celebrating empowerment, confidence and freedom through high-flying trapeze classes. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned flier, each two-hour class is geared to the individual. Fly School Circus says they strive to give students the feeling that they are rising above their perceived limitations. When was the last time you had a chance to fly the trapeze?

    Ages 6 and up can participate as well as adults under 250 lbs. Classes run from March 28 to April 27.

    The Life (and Death) of Harry Houdini - Saturday/Sunday, March 30 (2 p.m. and 8 p.m.) March 31 (2 p.m. and 5 p.m.)

    Take a journey back in time to the final performance of Harry Houdini. Watch as a magician’s assistant prepares the absinthe, the shackles and a séance before Houdini gasps for breath as his life flashes before his eyes. “You are the audience for this magic show of life, death, and the beyond.” This performance will be running until April 7.

    Flash of Time: A New Musical - Sunday, March 31 (7 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.)

    Premiering Sunday, March 31, the Time Machine comes to life through this “upbeat show, bringing together the past and future through rocking songs, large puppetry, passionate dancing, 16 amazing performers, and lots of special effects.” This family friendly musical is free to attend and will continue to run on Tuesdays through Sundays until April 27.
