Let’s see, what happened last night?
America got a new sweetheart. Oh, and Alabama thumped Notre Dame 42 to 14 to win the BSC Championship.
Actually the two events are related.
During the game, ESPN spent more time focusing on Katherine Webb in the stands than they did Nick Saban on the sidelines. Webb is the girlfriend of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron. She’s also the reigning Miss Alabama. And once ESPN’s announcers Brett Musberger and Kirk Herbstreit started drooling, um, enthusing over her in the first quarter, well, she became something of an instant celebrity.
The 23-year-old Auburn alumna (McCarron is 22) saw her Twitter followers skyrocket. “My followers went from 2,300 this morning to 96,000 by the end of the night. I don't know if I should even check now, I don't know what is going on,” Webb told a reporter after the game.
During the game, her phone was burning up with so many people texting and emailing her that the battery went dead.
Musberger’s rather effusive observations about the young lady reminded many of Vice President Joe Biden’s recent antics as he greeted the new members of Congress and their families.
McCarron, a junior, threw for 264 yards and four touchdowns. You’d be tempted to say he had the night of his life. But then again, have you seen his girlfriend?
