Star-studded 'Jesus Christ Superstar' live reboot coming to Wells Fargo Center

One thing I'll say for him, Jesus is cool. Or, at least, so says Caiaphas in Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1971 Broadway hit, Jesus Christ Superstar-which perhaps is why the show is set to kick off a 50-city "rock show" with stars including JC Chasez, John Lydon, and Brandon Boyd starting June 9.

One thing I’ll say for him, Jesus is cool. Or, at least, so says Caiaphas in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1971 Broadway hit, Jesus Christ Superstar—which perhaps is why the musical is set to kick off a 50-city “rock show” with stars including JC Chasez, John Lydon, and Brandon Boyd starting June 9.

Philadelphia, being the hard-rocking, Jesus-loving town that we are, will close out the tour with the Wells Fargo Center as the final stop on August 17. Because if the Lord’s run has to come to an end at some point, it might as well be here.

The new production will kick off June 9 in New Orleans, with Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd helming Judas’ role to Superstar contest winner Ben Forster’s Jesus. Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams has signed on for the part of Mary Magdalene, which she announced alongside Boyd this morning on Good Morning America.

Chasez, meanwhile, will take over duties as Pontius Pilate, and former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) will play the over-the-top King Herod.

Boyd calls the show “completely new” and “incredible,” which is good considering the 2012 Broadway run only lasted around three months. This particular tour, however, seems to be counting on the staying power names like Lydon, Chasez, and Boyd have as a result of their mainstream popularity and individual fan bases. Lydon, for me at least, more than accomplishes that goal. Seriously, imagine the guy doing this.

Still, though, we’ve got a while to wait before taking in the newest edition of Jesus Christ Superstar. Until August, though, you can check out a live cast performance from GMA below:
