'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' gets a sequel, confirms Adam Fickman as director

With the addition of Andy Fickman, the sequel that no one expected (wanted?) finally has a director on board. Brace yourselves, people: the Paul Blart: Mall Cop sequel is coming.

Kevin James will return as the titular character, Paul Blart, and will also serve as co-writer alongside Nick Bakay. The pair wrote the 2009 original, which became a sleeper hit after it garnered $146 million at the box office domestically. So, for those of you who thought they said pretty much all they had to say with the first Paul Blart, there’s your reason for the sequel.

No word yet on plot, but with Todd Garner and Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions joining Smith to produce, maybe expect something along the lines of Paul Blart 2: House Bunny. Shooting is set to start in April.

Director Fickman’s most recent credit is 2012’s Parental Guidance, a Billy Crystal comedy that nabbed $77 million in the US. Before that, though, Fickman worked on You Again and Disney’s 2009 remake of Escape to Witch Mountain, so a similarly kid-friendly tone ought to emerge here.

But with critics panning the last one as “hopelessly underwhelming,” “a suckfest,” and, simply, “bad,” pray for mercy should you take your kids to see the second. Either way, 2014 is off to a rough start.
