Where the seats are for O17. The smaller venues for Opera Philadelphia’s new opera festival sold out quickly, but that doesn’t mean they’re off-limits. The MOVE opera We Shall Not be Moved at the Wilma Theater (through Sept. 24), The Wake World at the Barnes Foundation (opening Monday through Sept. 25) and War Stories at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (through Sept. 23) are all going to be tough tickets. However, Opera Philadelphia has a ticket-alert system at www.operaphila.org/alert that notifies guests about tickets that become unexpectedly available, usually close to the performance date.
At this printing, availability was still good for The Magic Flute (through Sept. 24) and Elizabeth Cree (through Sept. 23), mainly because they’re in larger venues (the Academy of Music and the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater respectively). Of course, availability is pretty unlimited for Opera on the Mall, a Sept. 23 videocast of last spring’s Marriage of Figaro at Independence National Historical Park. That’s free, but it’s best to register at operaphila.org. – David Patrick Stearns
