Neil Young & Crazy Horse righteously roared at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia on Thursday night, letting loose the feedback and turning up the volume on a 13 song two-hour plus set.
The show was preceded by a bunch of white lab coat wearing roadies setting up a giant mic stand Rust Never Sleeps-style while The Beatles "A Day In The Life" played and the band members and roadies standing at attention for "The Star Spangled Banner." And it ended with an extended noise jam on "Like A Hurricane" that would have made Sun Ra smile. Patti Smith was fabulous in an opening slot, including a lovely take on Young's "It's a Dream" in the middle of her set.
Young's set list is below. A full review will be up online Friday and in Saturday's Inquirer. Young & Crazy Horse return to the area for a Hurricane Sandy benefit show at the Borgata in Atlantic City next Thursday.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse set list:
Love and Only Love / Powderfinger / Born in Ontario / Walk Like A Giant / The Needle and The Damage Done / Twisted Road / Singer Without A Song / Ramada Inn / Cinnamon Girl / F*#%in' Up / Mr. Soul / Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) / / Encore: Like A Hurricane

He plays down here in northern Virginia tonight. Wonderful RichieLemon
Absolutely awesome show in Philly last night. mrjarn
13 songs? That's it? Rush was at the Wells Fargo last month and played more than twice that many songs...and played for 3+ hours. Now that was a show! mvp15- two and a half hours thirteen songs thats more jammin.
so take off eh footlooseman
The beauty of last night's show was that it was not a bunch of 3 minute songs, but rather than enjoying what used to be very common- songs lasting much longer and seeing musicians jam making great music. Having said that, everyone wished he played more classics because he has so many. We are not paying the big bucks to hear songs from the last 10 years. His energy level was impressive and he seemed to enjoy being on stage. I would rate it a 7 out of 10. rwolffd12- I could have done without the extended (like, 5 minutes) atonal outro to "Walk Like A Giant". Otherwise, a great show (with a weird roadies-in-labcoats opening). Neil's singing and playing were fantastic. Patti Smith was terrific as well. 1980
Roadies, "amps" and stage set were homage to the Rust Never Sleeps tour. I loved it here in Fairfax with similar set. I wanna walk like a giant.... And having seen Rush many times in the old days, they really do not Jam like Neil and the Horse did, rather play faithful renditions of vinyl/CD versions of songs. Different beasts for sure... I thought it phenomenal tonight in Fairfax, but I have seen the hits on other occasions. This was passion and a group of guys having fun playing together after a decade or more apart. Magic! Rich-L
I can't imagine having to sit through that. How boring! carlosbeltran
