Guys tried to raft down river to Walmart with whiskey sours during Hurricane Sandy

Some people saw Hurricane Sandy as a dangerous weather scenario that could cause significant harm to people and property. Two guys in Maryland, though, saw some gnarly swell and one hell of an adventure. Marvin Lee Kingsbury and Charles Kent Bowers thought it would be a good idea to take a raft—reinforced with plywood, of course—down the Monocacy River so that they could shop at Walmart. They used noodles (yes, those noodles) to "stabilize" the boat. The men packed themselves whiskey sours as "victory drinks" that they'd use to celebrate their safe arrival at the store. In a surprising turn, they never made it because their vessel capsized. Kingsbury's wife—who previously refused to pick the pair up at Walmart had they completed their journey—was told that they never made it to the store. She went to the river, saw her husband's car floating and thought he was dead. Turns out they were alive and screaming for help while clinging to trees in the river. Emergency responders had to rescue them from the river. Scientists, ladies and gentlemen. [Washington Post]
