The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced its list of nominees for 2013. This isn't the list of acts who will get in, this is the list of act that voters will choose from to determine who gets in.
They are: Donna Summer, Lankenau Hospital-born Joan Jett, The Meters, Public Enemy, N.W.A., Albert King, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Kraftwerk, Heart, Randy Newman, Procol Harum, Rush, the Marvellettes, Deep Purple and Chic.
You have to have been making music for 25 years to qualify, so incendiary rappers N.W.A are eligible for the first time. Among the list of artists that the Rock Hall draws the most persistent for excluding, there are four - disco queen Summer, German techno innvocators Kraftwerk, pop-funk-disco architects Chic and Canadian prog-rock trio Rush - who have a shot this year. Long suffering make-up wearers Kiss do not.
The recently deceased Summer is a sure bet to get in, as are political sloganeering rappers Public Enemy, and probably Kraftwerk, who were feted at the Museum of Modern Art this year. Other than that, it looks wide open to me. The induction ceremony will be held in Los Angeles in April of next year. Chic's "Le Freak" is below.

How about the Moody Blues, Chicago, Jethro Tull, and Wings? guitarman
Next to Rush, I think that Cheap Trick - who is STILL putting out credible, quality music - is as glaring an omission as there is.
Joan Jett? Over Cheap Trick? Really?? bebopdeluxe1
I love N.W.A. & Public Enemy, but when did they become Rock & Roll acts? Chic had what, one song, 35 years ago? Who cares about them? Donna Summer? Disco died a long, long time ago. HorshamGuy
It stuns me that the HoF (more specifically Jan Werner) keeps excluding Yes. Their catalog is too strong to ignore but Jan never got beyond understanding a 4 beat. Pundit
As much as I dislike KISS, they're still a more legitimate rock band than donna $&@^$*# summer! yourmomsfavoriteposter
This comment has been deleted. slugo- "Public Enemy - c'mon, are you kiddin me, which of their recordings (notice, I didn't state song), rocked?"
"Bring The Noise!" E
Obviously @slugo you're a borderline racist idiot(being kind here) for not recognizing the social and political impact PE and NWA has had on the ENTIRE music industry. You do not have to like or even appreciate Hip-Hop music. However rock musicians worldwide have worked on several productions with PE and if you even took a second to listen to their music you'd hear the rock infleuence in their tracks. And yes their SONGS ROCKED and as was said back in the day, BUMPED!! NWA(I'm sure you've said the first letter to your particular group of friends) spawned Snoop Dogg(where don't you see him these days) and Dr.Dre(Beats headphones anyone?) is one of the greatest producrs in music history(not just Hip-Hop). Thanks for playing. BTW Albert King, The Marvellettes and Donna Summer should get in. Facts before ignorance
I don't care one way or another, but i love to hear rush fans whine that they aren't the hof, so i hope they're excluded again. eaglesfillthesky
Rolling Stone is lamer now than the periodicals it came into being to exploit. Gray Areas
Procol Harum and Chic had one hit. Rush was long overdue. They still sell out shows and are awesome live. Niko
Slugo, Public Enemy often used rock riffs within their songs so of the rap artists out there, they could actually be considered. not to mention, they worked hard to create a synergy with rock especially shown by their tours with Anthrax and other metal acts. rvb2321
Call me a junkie rocker, but it's about time RUSH got nominated. Another_1
Just remember David Lee Roth's quote: "Most rock critics like Elvis Costello, because most rock critics *look* like Elvis Costello." J H
The rocking roll hall of fame nominees are stupid. The best of the best are already in except for a select few and some that have not put in their time yet. If you like someones music it does not matter if they get included or not. zippy1346
