7 days of things to do in Philadelphia from Feb. 4 to 10

The Department of the Geographer, a military living-history unit, visits the Museum of the American Revolution both days this weekend to showcase the tools and techniques George Washington relied on to create maps and provide intelligence throughout the war. It's also a good time to catch the exhibit Among His Troops: Washington's War Tent in a Newly Discovered Watercolor, on display through Feb. 19.

For Feburary, the Kimmel Center's monthly dance party brings in the Colombian ensemble Combo Chimbita for a set, along with a set by the La Noche band. Host Kevin Ngo will be showing the crowd some groovy dance moves, as well.

Author Lauren-Brooke Eisen discusses private prisons from the perspective of inmates, their families, correctional staff, policy makers, activists, and executives from America's largest private-prison corporations. The talk is part of Eastern State's Searchlight series, which addresses issues in contemporary corrections.

The Guangdong Song and Dance ensemble brings award-winning dance drama to the Kimmel Center for two nights. Set against the backdrop of the Japanese occupation of 1930s China, the drama follows two lovers who are passionate about music. It was a very big deal in China after its 2014 premiere.

Bay Area genre-blenders perform at Union Transfer, bringing their blend of hip-hop and indie rock to Philly. Open Mike Eagle, a Los Angeles alternative hip-hop artist, opens.

Opera Philadelphia returns to the Academy of Music with the Philadelphia premiere of Written on Skin, George Benjamin's modern classic about a clandestine love affair, art, and violence. Drawn from a 13th-century legend, Benjamin's opera has been hailed by some as a 21st-century masterpiece in the years since its world premiere in 2012.

Stars of tomorrow from the Curtis Institute of Music perform classical music in the galleries amid the artwork of Hieronymus Bosch and his followers. This performance is offered in conjunction with the museum exhibition "Old Masters Now."
