The National Museum of American Jewish History is holding a panel exhibition titled Power of Protest: The Movement to Free Soviet Jews about how American Jewish activists helped Soviet Jews after World War II, when they were denied the rights to practice Judaism and leave the country.

Angel Olsen

Indie folk-rock singer Angel Olsen hits  Union Transfer a month after she released Phases, a critically acclaimed collection of B-sides, covers, and demos. Expect an intensely personal show elevated by Olsen's unique, soaring vocals.

Chanukah Wonderland

The Please Touch Museum celebrates  Hanukkah with a party at which  kids can learn how to play dreidel, draw holiday cards, and make Hanukkah foods. It culminates with an interactive concert in Hamilton Hall.

Fifth House Ensemble and Jason Vieaux

The Chicago new-music group will perform a new guitar concerto by Dan Visconti, artistic adviser for Astral Artists, to be performed by Vieaux. Living Language is "inspired by the special scales, expressive ornaments, and playing techniques of indigenous music from across the globe," according to Visconti, whose music can be funky and soulful, and often rather songful. — Peter Dobrin

The Color Purple

Don't miss The Color Purple at the Forrest Theatre,  winner of the 2016 Tony Award for best musical revival. Set to a score influenced by jazz, gospel, blues, and ragtime, the musical is about the lives of young black women in the American South during the 1930s.
