New Year's Eve American Style . . . The Philadelphia Orchestra's annual 7:30 p.m. New Year's Eve concert will be conducted this year by the urbane, supremely engaging Bramwell Tovey. The program includes the Strauss waltzes that are obligatory in Vienna, but also soprano Tracy Dahl singing Gershwin and Bernstein. Tickets: $60-160. Information: 215-893-1999 or www.philorch.org.
Hangover-free Bach. Choral Arts Philadelphia has been offering an immersive alternative to most New Year's Eve celebrations with Bach's complete Christmas Oratorio performed starting at 4 p.m. Saturday at Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral. The six-cantata cycle is conducted by Matthew Glandorf, who has made a specialty of Bach cantatas in recent years, with tenor James Reese as the Evangelist. Yes, it's long, but not as long as the St. Matthew Passion, and refreshments are served at the hour-long break in the middle. Tickets: $15-45. Information: www.choralarts.com
