Great Performances: The Hollow Crown - The War of the Roses. The Shakespeare history plays return for three more installments, kicking off this week with Henry VI Part 1, starring Tom Sturridge, Michael Gambon, and Hugh Bonneville. (Benedict Cumberbatch fan alert: The Sherlock star plays Richard III in the Dec. 18 and 25 installments, Henry VI Part 2 and Richard III.) 9 p.m. Sunday, WHYY12.

Empire. Note the early start for the midseason finale, ominously titled, "A Furnace for Your Foe." The show is scheduled to return in the spring, after the first season of Fox's new music drama, Star. 8 p.m. Wednesday, Fox.

Speechless. It's Christmas, and Maya (Minnie Driver) surprises her family with her holiday spirit. But then the family van is stolen. This will probably work out to be funnier than it sounds, because things nearly always do in this comedy, one of my favorites of the fall. 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, ABC.

The Man in the High Castle. The series based ever more loosely on Philip K. Dick's alternative-history novel releases a second disturbing and hard-to-fathom season. The United States remains split between Japanese and German occupation after World War II. Rufus Sewell, Alexa Davalos, and Rupert Evans return. Friday, Amazon.
