Philly-themed creepfest

Film buffs who rely on streaming services are in mourning: The Criterion Collection, that beloved distribution company of classic movies, is taking its works off Hulu.

Streaming services aren't particularly kind to classic film. These are movies that are supposed to be seen on a big screen, on film, and choices are limited. Hulu was the exception in that subscribers could watch some of cinema's greatest. Come Nov. 11, that option will be gone.

What's a movie geek to do? Binge watch, of course.

There's plenty to choose before Criterion's departure. My absolute favorite is Grey Gardens, the Maysles brothers' cinéma vérité documentary about a mother and daughter, former socialites and relatives of Jackie Onassis, who lived a supremely bizarre life cooped up in their decrepit mansion. (For hardcore Big and Little Edie fans, there's also the companion film, The Beales of Grey Gardens.)

But there are so many others to choose from, spanning classics new (Stranger Than Paradise) and old (Rashômon). Why not have a Philly-themed viewing party this weekend? Start with Eraserhead, a movie influenced by David Lynch's time as a PAFA student. Follow that with the Phoenixville-shot The Blob starring Steve McQueen. Close out the night with Chris Marker's experimental and gorgeous La Jetée, a film that served as the blueprint for the Philadelphia-shot, Brad Pitt-starring 12 Monkeys. - Molly Eichel
Where to binge:
Hulu Plus.

Like these? Binge this: After La Jetée, watch 12 Monkeys (Netflix).
