Philadelphia Mummers: Let's do it again

Last January's Grand Experiment, a cut-down Mummers Parade strutting south out of Center City and ending at Washington Avenue, was a success and will be repeated this year.

Last January's Grand Experiment, a cut-down Mummers Parade strutting south out of Center City and ending at Washington Avenue, was a success and will be repeated this year.

Some 10,000 costumed Mummers are expected to march. Most will assemble west of City Hall on Market Street and J.F.K. Boulevard, which are good places for a behind-the-scenes peek.

Performance points again will be at Dilworth Park, 15th and Market streets; outside the Union League, Broad and Sansom streets; and at Broad and Carpenter streets.

The parade will be televised by PHL17, but temperatures predicted to be in the 40s will be comfortable for in-person viewing. There are adequate toilet facilities and food vendors.

While the in-your-face Broad Street parade is the big draw, don't forget the Fancy Brigades' Broadway-worthy shows in the Convention Center. Tix ($20 and $25) are still available for the noon show; the 5 p.m. one is sold out.
