STAYING IN? Ellen Gray's TV picks

Stephen Merchant's cringe-worthy Stuart - a legendary Lothario in his own mind - returns for one last hurrah in a movie appealing enough to make me wish I'd liked the short-lived series more.

Mulaney is from Emmy Award-winning writer and comedian John Mulaney, about a rising stand-up comic trying to take his career to the next level starting Martin Short, left, and John Mulaney. (2014 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Ray Mickshaw/FOX)

* HELLO LADIES: THE MOVIE. 10 p.m. Saturday, HBO.

Stephen Merchant's cringe-worthy Stuart - a legendary Lothario in his own mind - returns for one last hurrah in a movie appealing enough to make me wish I'd liked the short-lived series more. Christine Woods returns as Stuart's roommate, Jessica, Nicole Kidman has a cameo and, yes, that's "Fargo's" breakout star Allison Tolman in a small role. But it's Merchant who finally sells Stuart as a man whose boorishness may not run quite deep enough to render him unlovable.

* THE AFFAIR. 10 p.m. Sunday, Showtime.

Maybe it wasn't just a summer fling. As Noah (Dominic West) heads back to Brooklyn, leaving Alison (Ruth Wilson) behind, I'm realizing that the people surrounding the dully adulterous duo are the reason I'm still watching.

* MULANEY. 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Fox29.

In case you're wondering where it went, the not-quite-canceled comedy has switched time slots with "Bob's Burgers." Forget John Mulaney: Martin Short deserves better than this.

* A ROYAL CHRISTMAS. 8 p.m. Saturday, Hallmark.

Lacey Chabert ("Party of Five") plays an aspiring fashion designer from South Philadelphia who inadvertently falls in love with the crown prince (Stephen Hagan) of a country I promise you've never heard of. He takes her home for the holidays to meet his mother the queen.
