ANYONE WHO knows me understands I am a pet lover and a huge proponent of adopting homeless animals rather than buying them from breeders. Today, I am going one better and urging you not only to visit your local rescue agency or animal shelter to find your next best friend, but to open your heart to an older animal, as well.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, founded in 1866, is the first humane organization in the Western Hemisphere. The agency works to rescue animals from abuse, pass humane laws and share resources with shelters nationwide.

The agency also urges compassionate people to opt to adopt an older pet and provides these reasons why you should:

* With older dogs, you get what you see. You won't guess whether they will grow into their huge paws, what their personalities are or whether the two of you can bond over a lifetime.

* Older dogs are much easier to train. Don't ever believe you can't teach an old dog new tricks. It simply isn't true.

* Senior dogs are super-loving. Those of you who already have seniors know they are devoted and grateful for what you give them.

* They don't need constant attention as puppies do and settle in quickly to a new routine.

* They are less likely to be chewers. They already have passed their teething years and are much less likely to chew destructively on your furniture or shoes.

* And finally, being a hero to an older animal just feels good. Older dogs are often the last to be adopted and the first to be euthanized. Save a life and feel good about yourself.

November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month. To honor older dogs, I made a dog bone container with instructions I found at family.disney.com/crafts.

Supplies you will need

* Large plastic container with lid

* Stickers and cutouts appropriate for your pet

* Paintbrush

* Mod Podge (available at craft stores)

How to make it

Remove labels on the container and wash and rinse inside and out and dry. Paint the container with Mod Podge. Place your stickers and cutouts where you want them. Let dry.

Repaint the container with Mod Podge, let dry and fill with treats.
