Sideshow: Marvel's next Captain America will be . . . a lady!

Marvel Studios, the feature-film arm of the comic-books empire, on Tuesday made a revolutionary move the likes of which our civilization has never seen: It plans to make its very first superhero movie headlined by a woman of the female persuasion.

A girl shall lead a Marvel film

Marvel Studios, the feature-film arm of the comic-books empire, on Tuesday made a revolutionary move the likes of which our civilization has never seen: It plans to make its very first superhero movie headlined by a woman of the female persuasion.

Captain Marvel, due July 6, 2018, will feature superheroine Carol Danvers. Created by Roy Thomas, Carol was introduced by Marvel Comics in 1968 as an officer in the United States Air Force. She's been known as Binary, Warbird, and Captain Marvel at various times in her history.

At the news conference, featuring Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr., Marvel gave itself more diversity props for Black Panther, due Nov. 3, 2017: Chadwick Boseman will star as T'Challa.

Chris & Jennifer's dull breakup

No screaming, biting, punching. No histrionics whatsoever when Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Martin broke up. E! News says the brainiac Coldplay rocker and Hunger Games babe have broken up after barely four months together, and they did so in a most calm, serene manner. "Things just didn't work out," Unnamed Insider tells E! News. "There are no hard feelings between them." Boringgggg . . .

Two tiny, toothsome tidbits

On Tuesday a judge extended Amanda Bynes' involuntary sojourn in a psychiatric facility for another 30 days, People reports. Bynes, 28, entered the facility Oct. 10 following a DUI arrest and shoplifting incident. . . . Jessica Pare (Mad Men) is expecting a kiddie by secret bf John Kastner, Us Weekly says.

Taylor Swift will sell real big

Taylor Swift's new LP 1989 has been out a day, and pundits already are predicting it'll become the first album of the year to sell 1 million copies in its first week. "No act has released an album in 2014 that has sold a million copies at all," says USA Today.

Even bad horror sells

Critically drubbed horror pic Ouija, starring Olivia Cooke, was the No. 1 film at the box office this weekend, making $20 mil, according to studio estimates. Keanu Reeves actioner John Wick trailed in second place with $14.2 mil, while Brad Pitt's WWII yarn Fury is at No. 3 with $13 mil.
