Katy Perry gives to local teachers

KATY PERRY did more than just "Roar" at last night's concert at the Wells Fargo Center as part of her Prismatic Tour. Perry honored a couple of local teachers for the great work they're doing inside the classroom, as part of "Make Roar Happen."

The project is in partnership with Staples, which sponsored Perry's tour and donated $1 million to DonorsChoose.org, a website that helps fund teachers working in underserved classrooms.

Barbara Janas, a middle-school math teacher from Juniata Park Academy, will receive the circular table she requested so that she is able to teach her special-education students more effectively.

Caitlin Matyas, an 11th-grade teacher from the Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush, in the Northeast, will receive more-efficient lab equipment for her students to fully investigate concepts of mechanics.

John Bolaris said he won't step into the celebrity boxing ring for promoter Damon Feldman, as I reported in my column last week. Bolaris was scheduled to fight Michael Lohan, father of constantly troubled starlet Lindsay Lohan.

"At first, I thought it would be having some fun, but what turned out to be fun was not so much fun," Bolaris said about the back out. "It just doesn't look right. I'm trying to rebuild my career, and my daughter did mention not wanting Daddy to fight.

"All my friends said, 'You're out of your mind, don't do that. Do you want to be like [previous Feldman competitors] Octomom or Tan Mom?' "

Feldman was angered by Bolaris' decision not to take part in the fight, which was scheduled for Sept. 20 with no official venue. In a text, Feldman told me that he had to cancel two events and lost money, which may lead him to sue Bolaris.

Bolaris said he did not sign any contracts with the noted/notorious fight promoter.

Tune in to "America's Got Talent" tonight to see Mara Justine of Galloway Township, N.J., belt it out. The 12-year-old has wowed the judges on the NBC talent show, singing Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing," and "And I Am Telling You," from "Dreamgirls."

Local duo Kindred the Family Soul will headline the Kindred Family Reunion on Saturday at Chew Playground (19th Street and Washington Avenue).

State Rep. Jordan Harris, in combination with Urban Roots and Philly Rising, is promoting the free show, which will also feature Jazmine Sullivan and the incredible Jaguar Wright. Up-and-coming acts, such as Suzann Christine, Mont Brown and Astronauts Really Fly, Brotherly Love and Jeremy Isaac, also will perform. Hot 107.9's Laiya and Shamara host the event, which takes place from noon to 8 p.m.

Former Phillies catcher Darren Daulton will be at McGillin's Olde Ale House (1310 Drury St.) from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday for a little meet-and-greet action. There's no cover for the event, with drink specials throughout.

* Director M. Night Shyamalan celebrated his daughter's birthday with a 26-person dinner party at Tashan (777 S. Broad St.). Shyamalan is a semiregular at the upscale Indian eatery.

* Legendary singer Chubby Checker was in town Thursday to see his buddy, attorney Jimmy Binns, sworn in as a Darby Township police officer.

* From a correspondent near and dear to this gossip reporter's heart: Eagles linebacker Connor Barwin stopped by Rittenhouse Hardware (2001 Pine St.) this weekend. He was very sweet, according to my mom.
