Big talent

For anyone who grew up in the 1960s, the name Allan Sherman brings to mind the hiccuping strains of Ponchielli's Dance of the Hours, but with the lyrics, "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah." Hard to believe the great song parodist's biggest hit is 50 years old. But it wasn't the portly comic's only achievement - he helped create the game show I've Got a Secret, had several hit records, won a Grammy, discovered Bill Cosby, and befriended President John F. Kennedy before his career began to flounder in the late '60s. Author Mark Cohen discusses his biography of the satirist, Overweight Sensation: The Life and Comedy of Allan Sherman, at 2 p.m. at the National Museum of American Jewish History, Fifth and Market Streets. Tickets are $8. Call 215-923-3811.
