Nearly three decades after The Cosby Show debuted on NBC, Bill Cosby is planning his return to primetime.

The comedian, 76, told Yahoo! TV that he’s teaming up with Cosby Show producer Tom Werner to develop a new family comedy.

“I want to be able to deliver a wonderful show to [a] network,” he said, “because there is a viewership out there that wants to see comedy, and warmth, and love, and surprise, and cleverness, without going into the party attitude.”

He added he wants his new show to satisfy “the people who have come to me in public places and said, ‘Can’t you put something on that I can watch?’”

Cosby, whose classic character Cliff Huxtable is one of the most beloved TV dads of all time, has often decried what he sees as the disappearance of wholesome family comedies on television.

“When you look at TV… There’s nothing much that I see where people are loved,” he said in a recent interview with Parade. “It’s not about the soul, the touch, the feel. It’s gone.”

He insisted his new series would not be a remake of The Cosby Show, but rather would feature older parents and their relationships with their grown children.

“It’s not like little children sitting around, it’s like a 28-year-old with the mother, a 28-year-old son taking his father somewhere,” he told Yahoo! TV, adding that modern viewers would welcome the kind of warm, unpretentious family comedy that made The Cosby Show so endearing.

“They would like to see a married couple that acts like they love each other, warts and all, children who respect the parenting, and the comedy of people who make mistakes,” he told Yahoo! TV. “Warmth and forgiveness. So I hope to get that opportunity, and I will deliver the best of Cosby, and that will be a series, I assume, that we could get enough people week after week after week to tune in to, to come along with us.”
