Legends in the house: Jay Z & Justin Timberlake
Jay Z & Justin Timberlake
Mix two hip-hop and pop-soul arena headliners and whatta ya get? "Legends of the Summer," a tour with enough heat to blow up a baseball park. Doesn't hurt that the artist also known as Shawn Carter is living large with his latest free-flowing, chart-topping ("Magna Carta . . . Holy Grail") album, a treatise on upward mobility and respect for roots. (Hope those plugs got Jigga a discount on his Maybach.)
But are we also buying the unhyphenated Jay Z's new stance as a performance artist, a "Picasso Baby" basking in the gallery glow with downtown trendies (as depicted in a current HBO film short)? Nah.
A much better collaborator is his stadium co-star Justin Timberlake, the former M.M. Club and 'NSYNC-ronized boy darlin' who had the good sense to exit the music biz for a spell to grow up and earn respect, making movies and making fun of himself on "SNL." Now J.T.'s returned to the fold with a stylish take on old-school soul ("The 20/20 Experience") fleshed out with a luxuriously brassy big band.
