Dan Gross: Philly rock band reaches Nirvana

NOT EVERY band is praised by not only one, but both surviving members of Nirvana.

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, the former Nirvana drummer, said on comedian Marc Maron's WTF podcast that he loved Philly rockers Bleeding Rainbow. Ex-Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic posted his appreciation last week.

"We all really freaked out when we first saw the Krist Novoselic tweet about how he likes us," said Sarah Everton, who sings and plays bass and guitar in the band. "And then when we listened to Dave Grohl say he was really into us on the WTF podcast, we all lost it. We're all huge Nirvana fans."

Everton said Nirvana's "In Utero" was the first CD she ever bought when she was 13 and she was inspired by its cover while doing art for Bleeding Rainbow's new album, "Yeah Right."

"Krist and Dave liking my band is the quintessential mind-f---," said Everton, whose Bleeding Rainbow plays Feb. 14 at Johnny Brenda's (Frankford & Girard). And who knows? Maybe they'll get to play with Grohl and Novoselic's new outfit featuring Paul McCartney and Pat Smear, from 1980s punk act The Germs, who played live with Nirvana in later years.

* Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly went for a cheesesteak at Dalessandro's (Henry & Wendover) while in town on a recruiting visit last week, the day before the scandal broke involving his linebacker Manti Te'o and the fake death of his fake girlfriend.

* Morrissey shopped for DVDs at FYE (Broad & Chestnut) Wednesday afternoon. The sadsack songman was accompanied by two English hooligan-type guards and visited on a day off between shows. The former Smiths singer played Friday night in Reading.

* Donovan McNabb and Sterling Sharpe caught comedian Paul Mooney's performance Friday at Helium (2031 Sansom) while in the area to work at NFL Films in Mount Laurel.

* Actor Bentley Haddon Quaye enjoyed the Goose Island Beer dinner at FIN at Atlantic City's Tropicana on Thursday. The actor appears in "Do No Harm," the upcoming NBC split-personality thriller, which premieres Jan. 31.

* Bree Olson, retired porn star and former Charlie Sheen "Goddess," appears on a billboard for ArrangementFinders.com that can be seen on Interstate 95 north between the Girard and Allegheny exits. It's the first billboard erected for the website that helps women find rich men or helps married couples find women for some extra, uh, companionship.

Three local folks will be seen with Meredith Vieira on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" this week. Glenside's Joe Cartin, an Archbishop Wood and Temple grad who works in sales, will be on Tuesday's show (12:30 p.m., ABC). Amy McGinley, of Merchantville, N.J., an eighth-grade math and science teacher at G.W. Childs Elementary will be seen on Wednesday's episode. Meanwhile, Laura Bowers, an architect who lives in town, will be on both Tuesday's and Wednesday's episodes.

Camden-native actress Tasha Smith, known from Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married?" films, takes part in the "Voices of Domestic Violence: Dance, Music and Monologues," event March 29 and 30 at the Prince Music Theater (1412 Chestnut). Mo'Shay LaRen, of WRNB (100.3-FM), is a board member of the Pennsylvania Coalition against Domestic Violence and founded the Love Yourself Campaign in 2009. LaRen is producing the event.
