Sideshow: Recovering from a virus

Robin Roberts, who has been sharing her battle with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) with the public, on Monday told fans she returned home this weekend after a week in the hospital. "A latent virus," such as many bone-marrow transplant patients have to face, "was not responding to medication," the Good Morning America anchor wrote in a surprise update on Facebook. "Our immune systems usually take care of a virus like this . . . but mine is only 59 days old. Physically I felt fine but being back in the hospital took an emotional toll on me." Roberts, 51, underwent a bone-marrow transplant in September. The donor, sister Sally-Ann, has flown to New York to be with her. Robin allayed fans' fears. "I decided to look at my brief stay as a 'tuneup,' " she wrote, "and then I would be back on the road to recovery. By the grace of God, I am!"

Four wranglers who worked on Peter Jackson's little old $500 mil Hobbit trilogy say 27 animals (out of about 150) featured in the films died because the production company had them housed at an unsafe farm. The American Humane Association, which oversaw the animals, say none were harmed during the actual filming. A Jackson rep, Matt Dravitzki, said horses, goats, chickens, and one sheep did die, some from natural causes, none from mistreatment. Dravitzki said the horses' deaths may have been preventable.

Daniel Craig made a surprise visit to British troops at Camp Bastion in Helmand Province in Afghanistan Sunday, bringing with him a print of his latest 007 pic, Skyfall, which was screened for about 800 soldiers. Craig, 44, gave a brief speech to introduce the film and took a tour of the camp, says the New York Daily News.

At the 40th Anniversary American Music Awards on Sunday, big names such as Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Christina Aguilera, and more sang their hearts out, but one performer stole the show: the pride of Abington, Pink! Brit star Russell Brand, who so cruelly chucked out America's sweet Katy Perry onto the streets 13 months after wedding her, has been accused of running over A Homeless Guy in L.A. with his SUV. Brand, 37, was taped helping the man pick up his meager belongings after the unfortunate's cart was knocked over in the alleged crash.

Brand on Sunday swore to TMZ there was no crash. He says he pulled over when he noticed the man's cart had a spill. "He's kind of a hero," TMZ concludes. Now, I wouldn't go that far.

The son of Sir Elton John and partner David Furnish is named Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, and he is about to be joined by a brother or sister, the couple recently announced!! Zachary, a 23-month-old sweetie, on Monday was spied by paparazzi walking under his own steam in Sydney, Australia, a day after his dad played a show in Melbourne, says the Australian. The duo have hired the same surrogate mom who gave birth to Zachary to do it again, and they say she's in her first trimester.

Justin Bieber, who on Friday reportedly had an unfriendly meeting with ex-gf Selena Gomez, may be closer to reacquiring her heart. E!'s Marc Malkin says the Biebster arrived at the AMAs Sunday with mum Pattie Mallette on his arm, but left after the show holding hands - with Selena! (Hope Mrs. Belieber got home OK!) Selena had no offical reason to be at the AMAs: She wasn't a guest or presenter. TMZ says JustGo looked cozy as they made their way to an after-party at Bootsy Bellows nightclub in West Hollywood.
