Sideshow: Ah, love; Aniston says yes

Justin Theroux, we are told, rocks Jennifer Aniston's world.

The screenwriter, actor, and all-around cute guy has made headlines around the globe by proposing to make an honest woman of Jennifer Aniston, his rep said on Sunday.

Experts say Justin has filled the void left in Jen's heart seven years ago when Brad Pitt vacated those ventricles after a five-year marriage. But is Jen's not a bittersweet triumph? After all, Pitt outpaced her on the remarriage front, becoming engaged to his beloved anti-Jen, Angelina Jolie, many weeks ago.

Jen's happy day came Friday. She and Justin were in the throes of celebrating his 41st birthday when he popped the question. His rep tells E!News: "Jennifer . . . accepted his proposal of marriage." Added the rep, "They're great friends." The couple met on the set of David Wain's pro-hippie comic film Wanderlust. It was an "idyllic" shoot, Jen told InStyle in March, adding that she had arrived, finally, at a "joyful and peaceful" place in her life.

Chad Johnson TV show killed

Miami Dolphins receiver Chad Johnson, who was dropped by the team on Sunday after being arrested for allegedly head-butting his wife, Evelyn Lozada, also has lost his TV deal. VH1 on Monday said "due to the . . . seriousness of the allegations," it is yanking the reality show, Ev & Ocho, a record of Johnson and Lozada's engagement and wedding, which was set to premiere Sept. 3.

It's difficult to gauge the disastrous effects its cancellation will have on culture and the people of this great land.

Closing Olympic blunder for NBC

These may be the words for which we will always remember the London Olympics. They were uttered by Bob Costas during the closing ceremonies as the epic Symphony of British Music was building to a crescendo:

"We'll be back from Olympic Stadium in about an hour for the London closing party featuring The Who. But stay tuned now for a full episode of Animal Practice, the new NBC comedy, presented commercial-free."

That's right, the network that had already taken the liberty of cutting out Ray Davies singing "Waterloo Sunset" and deleting the entire performance by Muse, the band that wrote the London Olympic theme, decided to move The Who into the wee hours so that it could promote one of its new sitcoms. But this one's got a monkey!

What expert was giving you musical advice, NBC? Ryan Seacrest? A little advice for next time in Rio: You can keep Jessie J and the Spice Girls. We'll take The Who. Or maybe we won't watch at all. Then we can be sure we won't get fooled again.

Books by celebs young 'n' old

Scott Stapp, the sensitive soul behind Creed's leap-o'-faith lyrics, will release his first tell-all memoir, Sinner's Creed, on Oct. 2. Cowritten by Rolling Stone mag's David Ritz (Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye), it "describes my childhood, my internal battle with drugs and depression and how I lost control of my life," says Stapp, 39, "and the challenges I've faced before coming to grips and finding sobriety." Creed is on a world tour that will bring the band to the Sands Bethlehem Event Center on Aug. 27 and the House of Blues in Atlantic City on Sept. 7.

Billy Crystal, 64, will turn that ultimate event, turning 65, into a book and a possible stage show. The New York Daily News says the frequent Oscars host has signed a $4 mil contract with Henry Holt & Co. for the book, which will feature humorous commentary about aging. "There are 77 million of us baby boomers in the country and this book will speak to them," Crystal tells the A.P.

Clueless' Alicia Silverstone, 35, will release two books in 2014: The Kind Mama, a healthy living guide for new moms, and a companion book, The Kind Diet Cookbook.

Gossip petits fours (tidbits 'n' pieces)

The Kennedization of Taylor Swift moves apace: The 22-year-old singer has bought a $5-mil house in Hyannis Port, Mass., to be near her audaciously boyish new beau, Conor Kennedy, 18, whose entire clan lives close at hand, says People. . . . The new Harper's Bazaar features a chat with Johnny Depp's ex-belle Vanessa Paradis, 39. The interview was conducted two days before the couple said they had broken up. It's instructive: "Love is the strongest and most fragile thing we have in life," she says. "Nothing is ever for sure, but when something in love doesn't work from the beginning, it's never going to work. Don't push it."

Aguilera: Good luck finding talent, Brit

In a gracious gesture of sisterhood, Christina Aguilera, talent coach on NBC's The Voice, set aside the TV ratings war and welcomed two talent-show newcomers - Britney Spears, who will be a judge on Fox's The X Factor, and American Idol's Mariah Carey.

Hear Christina roar! "You know this business, especially in my genre of pop, [people] pit us against one another, and women against women, and this and that," she said Sunday at a media confab. "I'm not down for that. At this point in my life, I have no patience for it. So I'm, like, come in, the more the merrier."
